Demand for electricity in this region is on the rise and transmission and distribution capacity developments need to keep pace. In Vietnam the lack of power transmission lines linking to the national grid has become the biggest challenge and will need VND148 trillion for its power transmission projects from now until 2015. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines has announced 11 priority transmission projects for this year and the country wants to have 4,500 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity in the next 10 years. The usage of the latest technologies is fast catching up among Asian utilities with China leading the way. China has the potential to be at the forefront of smart grid technology developments. Korea meanwhile wants to establish a smart grid city by 2011. It is clear that is a pressing need for transmission and distribution networks to be expanded and improved and new technology like smart grids needs to be harnessed to deliver energy more efficiently and reliably.
